Andriake Ruins by Çayağzı

Notes

Andriake was an important port town in ancient times supporting the nearby city of Myra. There are several interesting buildings in decent shape – worth a short stop on your way to/from Demre. Of particular note is the large, impressive granary.

Other sights at the site include the remains of a church (just foundation and parts of some walls), the agora, the granary, a bath house, a purple-dye workshop, another church (with the pulpit worth a good look), and a large cistern (which is worth exploring a bit). Following along this stretch is the ancient port walkway. Further east is the watchtower.

The large area of marshland between the ruins and the hillside is actually where the harbour itself used to be – today (like Patara harbour) it is silted over and is home to large numbers of birds, turtles, and frogs.

Excavations are on-going at this site and new discoveries are being made. Significant restoration work is also being done.

How You Can Help

Trail research is never actually done. Here’s some of what we’re looking for:
✅   More photos! Ideally with geo-location information in the metadata. In addition to using some photos on Trekopedia, we add them to our internal reference database which significantly helps us with trail research. The more photos, the better! If you are willing to share your collection with us, we’d be incredibly grateful. Let us know and we’ll arrange a transfer.

✅   Points of interest. Help us identify (and geo-locate) accommodations, attractions, restaurants, markets, trail waypoints, confusing or problematic junctions, difficult or hazardous places, water sources, and so on.

✅   Tips & recommendations. Share your thoughts with other hikers.
In addition to the above, please see this article for information on more general ways you can help. Thanks!
