Town
Demre
ID:
130

Town located between Kapaklı and Finike, also known as Kale.

The town has a long history. It was a key city (as Myra) of the Lycians, with coins dating back to 300BC and was important through Roman times as well. It was also the home of Saint Nicholas of Myra aka Santa Claus – bet you didn’t know that… 🙂

Nitty-Gritty

Transport

Dolmuş service is available from here to points all along the coast – the bus station (“otogar”) is located on Kolcalar Sokak, which is on your right, a couple of blocks before the church of Saint Nicholas, as you go north through Demre on your way to Myra.

Highlights

Demre’s two main attractions (some not-so-kindly suggest it is its only two attractions…) are the Church of Saint Nicholas and the very impressive ruins of Myra.

Saint Nicholas’ church (a popular site for Russian tourists, due to Saint Nicholas being the patron saint of Russia) is located near the main square. The route through Demre passes right by it. The ruins of Myra are about two km further to the north.

Accommodations

For a town of its size, Demre doesn’t have a particularly huge amount of accommodation options though you generally shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a place to stay.

Amenities

All the major amenities are available here, including restaurants, markets, banks, and fresh water.
