Essentials

Gavurağılı (village)
Letoon (village)
Winding W–E section with Letoon to the E.
Largely a flat section other than one small hill to the W of the Pydnai ruins. The hill averages about 12% slope on both sides with portions at about 15%.
Mostly along tracks / rural roads through scrub / woodlands and across sandy dunes, plus along cobblestone roads  through greenhouses near / in Letoon.
Way-finding can be a bit confusing in places (mainly to the W of the Pydnai ruins); stay alert at junctions. Between Karadere and Letoon way-finding is generally good with signposts at key junctions.

Handy Things to Know

The following notes are gathered from our own experiences and from feedback sent to us by other hikers. Let us know how we can improve these notes – and thanks!

Water

  • Limited water along this section. Top up at the endpoints.

Highlights

  • Passes directly through the Pydnai ruins, which is a largely unmaintained and unrestored site.
  • Passes beside the Letoon ruins (admission fee required to go into the site, though much of the ruins can be seen from the road).
  • Nice views over the beach and over the endless greenhouses of the delta.
  • Has some great coastal views in places.

Route Planning

  • There’s an increasingly popular unofficial option between Gavurağılı and Karadere that goes mostly via quiet rural roads close to the coast (plus footpaths through the Pydnai ruins). It’s shorter than the main route and, being mostly on roads, it’s faster, which can be worthwhile if your stage is lengthy and you are trying to shave a bit of distance / time. There’s also an unofficial variant that bypasses the Pydnai ruins entirely, cutting off a fair amount of distance.
  • Between Karadere and Letoon, it is possible to follow an unofficial path along rural roads the entire way. Can be quicker and easier, especially in wet conditions.

Alerts / Hazards

  • Watch out for dogs in this area. There have been periodic reports of some aggressive dogs – wave your hiking poles at them menacingly if necessary.

Accommodations

  • In addition to the endpoint communities of Gavurağılı and Letoon, accommodation can be found at / near Karadere (slightly off-route).

Camping

  • There’s a few good camping locations, with most people camping either SW of the Pydnai ruins or along Karadere Beach.
  • For those camping in the beach area, be alert that camping on the dunes can be both sandy and damp – expect to be shaking out your gear in the morning! Sometimes camping there isn’t permitted.

Amenities

  • Limited amenities are available at both endpoints. You can usually get food / beverages at Karadere as well.
  • Public toilets are available directly on-route in Gavurağılı.

Transport

  • Dolmuş service is available all along this section.
  • There’s a dolmuş stop at Karedere; handy if you plan to skip some / all of the delta between Karadere and Kalkan

How You Can Help

Trail research is never actually done. Here’s some of what we’re looking for:
✅   More photos! Ideally with geo-location information in the metadata. In addition to using some photos on Trekopedia, we add them to our internal reference database which significantly helps us with trail research. The more photos, the better! If you are willing to share your collection with us, we’d be incredibly grateful. Let us know and we’ll arrange a transfer.

✅   Points of interest. Help us identify (and geo-locate) accommodations, attractions, restaurants, markets, trail waypoints, confusing or problematic junctions, difficult or hazardous places, water sources, and so on.

✅   Tips & recommendations. Share your thoughts with other hikers.
In addition to the above, please see this article for information on more general ways you can help. Thanks!
