Essentials

Bel (village)
Gavurağılı (village)
NW–SE section with Gavurağılı to the SE and the hamlet of Belceğiz a little NW of the midpoint.
Rolling hills (mostly under 10% slope though with portions closer to 20%) for the NW half but with a steep slope descending towards Gavurağılı in the SE half averaging about 22% but with long stretches exceeding 30%.
The NW half follows rural roads the entire way. Much of the SE half, though, is extremely rocky and uneven and can be deadly on your ankles and shins. Watch your step carefully. Scrapes from rocks can be another problem. Also, there is one stretch with flat-top rocks on an incline where it is important that your footwear have good grip (non-slip).
Way-finding in the NW half is easy, with just one blaze-marked junction for which you need to stay alert. For the SE half, way-markings are not always reliable though generally it isn’t too difficult to find the path.

Handy Things to Know

The following notes are gathered from our own experiences and from feedback sent to us by other hikers. Let us know how we can improve these notes – and thanks!

Water

  • Water sources tend to be unreliable and/or very dirty on this stretch.

Highlights

  • While on the steep slope there are fantastic views towards the coast, though regrettably you’ll find that your eyes have to be mostly fixated on the path right at your feet rather than the general scenery…

Tips

  • Non-slip footwear recommended. There are a lot of flat rocks that seem like ice in wet conditions (and sometimes even in dry conditions).
  • This is generally an exposed slope. Early morning starts are recommended to avoid the worst of the afternoon sun.

Alerts / Hazards

  • Be aware that the rocks along the steep slope can be very sharp and sometimes pointed (an extra reason to avoid stumbling, as if you needed one!) and there are areas of scree (loose rocks).
  • This is one of the more common places on the Lycian Way for ankle, shin, and knee injuries – watch your footing carefully, especially in wet or windy conditions.

Accommodations

  • Limited accommodation is available at the endpoints but nothing in-between.

Camping

  • There’s a good camping spot at the top of the hill just S of Bel plus a couple of others slightly SE of Belceğiz.
  • Once on the steep slope to/from the coast, there are no suitable locations that we are aware of.

Amenities

  • Stock up at the endpoints as there is nothing available along this section, including in the hamlet of Belceğiz.

How You Can Help

Trail research is never actually done. Here’s some of what we’re looking for:
✅   More photos! Ideally with geo-location information in the metadata. In addition to using some photos on Trekopedia, we add them to our internal reference database which significantly helps us with trail research. The more photos, the better! If you are willing to share your collection with us, we’d be incredibly grateful. Let us know and we’ll arrange a transfer.

✅   Points of interest. Help us identify (and geo-locate) accommodations, attractions, restaurants, markets, trail waypoints, confusing or problematic junctions, difficult or hazardous places, water sources, and so on.

✅   Tips & recommendations. Share your thoughts with other hikers.
In addition to the above, please see this article for information on more general ways you can help. Thanks!
